Can You Apply Stucco Over DensGlass?

When you go through the technical data sheet provided by GP Building Products, who are the manufacturers of DensGlass, they mention that stucco can be applied over DensGlass.

Therefore, stucco is an approved wall covering for DensGlass. However, they also go on to explain that to ensure a strong bond between Stucco and DensGlass, you must use a metal lath.

And it’s not just any kind of metal lath but one which has a paper backing. If you can’t find this option, then you can use regular metal lath but with at least two layers of building paper behind it.

Besides the above approval from the manufacturer, one thing you have to know about DensGlass is that it doesn’t expand or contract.

Therefore, it’s one of the best foundations for stucco because there won’t be any movements that may lead to the formation of cracks.

How to Apply Stucco Over DensGlass?

Above, I gave you a brief overview of how you can stucco over DensGlass. But to ensure a proper bond between stucco over DensGlass here is a detailed step-by-step guide on how you can apply stucco over DensGlass sheathing.

Step 1: Gather Essential Materials

You’ll need paper-backed metal lath, a staple gun, a moisture barrier, and a trowel to lay the stucco. Don’t forget some metal shears which will come in handy in cutting the metal lath.

Step 2: Install a Weather Resistant Barrier

A weather-resistant barrier or a house wrap is the first thing you need to install before the metal lath. This prevents moisture intrusion. I hope you’re aware of the dangers associated with water penetration.

Step 3: Install the Metal Lath

This is a very straightforward procedure. Take the metal lath and hang it over the DensGlass sheathing. Secure it to the sheathing with the help of a staple gun. You’ll need an extra pair of hands for this step.

In case you couldn’t find the paper-backed metal lath. Apply two layers of building paper over the DensGlass and then follow it up with the metal lath.

Step 4: Trowel the Stucco Over the DensGlass

It’s now time to apply stucco. Please note that the application method you should follow in this step should be by manufacturer instructions. This is crucial in preventing failure.

Begin by preparing the stucco mixture. I’d advise you to prepare stucco in smaller quantities. This is to prevent it from drying prematurely.

Then using a trowel, apply the stucco over the DensGlass and metal lath. Feel free to play around with different patterns to enhance the aesthetics.

Add more coats if necessary and then let the stucco dry. And you’ll have successfully applied stucco over DensGlass.

Will The Use of Stucco Affect DensGlass Warranty?

Not at all. Because the manufacturer of DensGlass approves the use of stucco as a wall covering, doing so will not infringe the warranty. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about warranty issues when applying stucco over DensGlass.

Common Problems Associated with Applying Stucco Over DensGlass

As you approach this process of installing stucco over DensGlass, you need to be aware of some of the common challenges one may run into.

Here are a couple of common problems associated with applying stucco over DensGlass;

1. Cracking – One of the main problems of having stucco on your home’s exterior is cracking. And this has got nothing to do with the DensGlass sheathing.

If stucco is applied incorrectly or the building experiences significant temperature changes, cracks may develop on the stucco.

2. Moisture penetration – Even though DensGlass is moisture resistant, that doesn’t mean some of the side effects of water damage can’t occur in such a setup.

Because stucco is porous, it will let water through, and without a proper water barrier, it can lead to mold development.

3. Delamination – Let no one mislead you that stucco can be applied over DensGlass without a metal lath. Doing so automatically leads to delamination. Also, poor application of stucco will lead to delamination.

4. Staining – This is a common issue that affects all stucco systems and not just those applied over DensGlass sheathing. Stains can be caused by dirt or mildew. The good news is that stains can be cleaned easily.

What are the Advantages of Using DensGlass as a Stucco Substrate?

There are many types of sheathing you can apply stucco over. But what makes DensGlass a suitable substrate for stucco? Allow me to take you through some of the advantages of using DensGlass sheathing as a stucco substrate;

DensGlass is water resistant and because stucco is porous, that gives your setup an extra line of defense against moisture intrusion.

DensGlass is also mold-resistant. Most stucco substrates create a thriving environment for mold but as you can see in this case, DensGlass doesn’t.

  It’s also important to note that DensGlass is a very stable sheathing board that can withstand temperature changes. So, it won’t swell or contract easily.

You’ll also be glad to know that DensGlass has a high fire rating. Therefore, this increases your home’s safety.

Besides being durable, DensGlass is also easy to install. Therefore, when installing it, you’ll have a much easier time compared to other stucco substrates.

Key Factors to Consider When Applying Stucco Over DensGlass

To ensure stucco bonds permanently over DensGlass, there are a couple of factors you need to keep in mind;

Never forget to use a water barrier. This helps mitigate most moisture-related issues.

As for the materials involved in this project, they need to be of high quality. From the stucco to the building wrap, please stick to quality products from reputable companies.

I would also recommend using corrosion-resistant fasteners. These have a much longer lifespan.

Before installing stucco over DensGlass, you have to ensure the latter substrate is flat and free of damage.

Over the years, I have noticed that cracks in stucco systems applied over DensGlass usually occur along the joints. So, before installation, I heavily recommend reinforcing the joints with either fiberglass mesh tape or caulk.

It’s also crucial to apply the stucco according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you don’t give stucco enough time to dry or if you apply it too thick, that can lead to delamination in the future.

Remember that maintenance is an important part of ensuring stucco lasts long over DensGlass.

Does Applying Stucco Over DensGlass Affect Any Building Codes?

Whenever it comes to sheathings and wall coverings, you need to pay keen attention to building codes. If you’re a fan of Build It Fine, then you’re familiar with our motto “Always confirm with local building codes before starting any project”.

Most local building codes usually require the installation of a weather barrier in such systems. Also, depending on where your property is located, you have to adhere to the energy efficiency requirements.

Your DensGlass sheathing paired up with stucco needs to reach the recommended R-value. Do not forget about fire resistance ratings. Properties especially those located in urban areas need to have a high fire rating.

To avoid non-compliance or issues with inspection, make sure that you understand local building codes before embarking on this project.

  1. Good article. I assume control joints in the stucco need to be installed at +/- 10 feet apart vertically and horizontally for a max of +/- 100 square feet for each panel
