Dryvit is the ideal type of stucco you can use to prevent water entry into other layers of your wall. In most cases, Dryvit is applied on top of another EIFS stucco system.
Apart from doing a good job at keeping your walls dry, this synthetic stucco doesn’t have the best-looking finish.
That’s why if you have decided to use Dryvit on your walls, you may consider painting it. But can Dryvit be painted?
Can Dryvit Be Painted?
A few years ago, it was impossible to paint Dryvit because there wasn’t a paint formulated to adhere to such a system.
However, today, you can paint over Dryvit. But you must use the correct type of paint. Otherwise, the paint job will not hold up.
There being so many types of stucco systems, it’s difficult for property owners to know which ones can or can’t be painted on. When it comes to Dryvit stucco, you can always cover it with some paint if you want to improve its finish.
What is the Best Type of Paint to Use on Dryvit?
As mentioned earlier, Dryvit can be painted over. However, the type of paint you use determines how long it will last. There are several types of paint you can use on Dryvit, which include;
• Revyvit
Of all types of paints you can use on Dryvit, Revyvit should be your top choice. This is a premixed sand-textured water-based coating that is made specifically by Dryvit.
It can be used to renovate or improve the finish of worn-out Dryvit. It is an elastomeric coating. That’s why it works so well on Dryvit stucco. This paint also comes with a hydrophobic coating that repels water.
You can get Revyvit in different types of colors. So, if you wish to change the finish on your walls, it is a great choice.
Revyvit can also be used to fill in chips and cracks on your EIFS stucco system. Therefore, it can improve the finish of Dryvit.
The biggest problem with Revyvit is that it’s not widely available. You can only find it in selected shops and stores. Alternatively, you can order it online.
• Acrylic Latex Paint
If you cannot get Revyvit to paint on Dryvit, you can always use acrylic latex paint. This type of paint is readily available. It leaves behind an impressive finish on Dryvit stucco and has a quick drying time.
Not forgetting that it is relatively easy to apply. Acrylic latex is the second-best type of paint you can use on Dryvit.
Should You Clean Dryvit Before Painting?
Now that you know Dryvit can be painted. You are probably excited to get this project started. But there is one important thing you need to know.
Surface preparation is a crucial step in painting over Dryvit. If your stucco system has been around for a while, there is a good chance that there are mold, dirt, and impurities on it.
The paint may not adhere properly if you paint directly over a dirty and contaminated stucco system. Before anything else, you need to wash your Dryvit with bleach and water. It should then be given enough time to dry before you can proceed with anything else.
Apart from cleaning, the other thing that you need to do is fill and seal any holes on Dryvit before painting over it. If you are using Revyvit, there is no need to fill holes because it will do that job on its own.
But if you are using acrylic paint, it’s mandatory to fill any holes in your system. You can use caulk on openings and holes on Dryvit.
Why Should You Use Elastomeric Paint Over Stucco?
When it comes to finding the best type of paint for stucco, you should consider one that has elastomeric properties. Elastomeric refers to paints that portray an elastic behavior.
Dryvit stucco expands and contracts, depending on temperature changes. Therefore, if you use regular paint, frequent expansion, and contraction can lead to cracks.
Paints such as Revyvit are perfect options for Dryvit because they are elastomeric. They can stretch and accommodate the movements of Dryvit.
While we are still on features that make up the best paint for Dryvit, you should also consider breathable paint. Such kind of paint will allow the Dryvit to expel moisture from the walls and other materials beneath.
If your Dryvit cannot breathe, trapped moisture can damage other materials behind your wall, eventually leading to the failure of your EIFS system.
What is the Best Method of Painting Over Dryvit?
The best method of painting Dryvit is by using a roller brush. Due to Dryvit’s rough finish, a roller brush is more capable of applying uniform, thick, and even coats.
In most cases, Dryvit is usually installed on large surfaces, which can take forever if you are painting them using a brush. A roller makes application much easier.
Therefore, even though you can apply Dryvit using an airless sprayer or a thistle brush, your best option is to use a roller brush. It will get the job done much quicker and easier.
Can You Paint Over Old Dryvit?
As long as you use the above-recommended paints, you can restore the finish of Dryvit no matter how old it is. But you have to understand that if your Dryvit system is extremely worn-out, paint isn’t going to fix it.
A paint job only works on minor damage on Dryvit. But when it comes to extensive damage, the best solution is to replace it with another stucco system.
How Many Coats of Paint Should You Apply on Dryvit?
When it comes to painting over Dryvit, one or two coats are usually enough. However, I would recommend two coats if you want a deeper finish.
How long you should wait in between coats depends on the type of paint that you are using. Kindly refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure that you give each coat enough time to cure.
How Long Does Paint Last on Dryvit?
If you use quality paint and apply it according to the instructions shared above, it can last anywhere from two to five years. There are plenty of factors that determine the lifespan of paint on Dryvit.
For instance, the weather experienced within your area. The paint won’t last very long if it’s constantly raining or the temperatures are extremely high.
Another factor worth considering is the type of paint you intend to use. Revyvit and regular acrylic latex paints don’t have a similar lifespan. Revyvit, because it is formulated for use on Dryvit, will last much longer.
Do You Need to Apply Primer Before Painting Dryvit?
Primer is mandatory if you decide to paint acrylic latex paint. If you plan to use Revyvit, there is no need for a primer.
But as for acrylic latex paints, a primer goes a long way in ensuring better adhesion between the paint and the Dryvit. Ensure that you choose a primer compatible with Dryvit and acrylic latex.
Can You Paint Dryvit Using Weatherlastic Smooth?
Weatherlastic smooth is another product made by Dryvit and can also be used to paint synthetic stucco. It is a water-based coating. You will be glad to know that it is elastomeric. Therefore, it’s flexible enough to withstand movements.
Other benefits of Weatherlastic smooth include its resistance to dirt, mildew, and cracking. It stays clean for much longer and can restore the finish of aged Dryvit.
